Shade lawns under a 1960s canopy
Floratam needs six or more hours of direct sun, and under Carrollwood's oaks it rarely gets them. The fix is matching grass to light: shade-tolerant St. Augustine cultivars such as CitraBlue, Seville or Palmetto where there's partial sun, and mulch or groundcover beds where there isn't. Raising the lower canopy (removing low limbs so morning and evening light reaches the ground) often helps more than any amount of fertilizer.
Shaded turf also needs less water and less nitrogen than sunny turf, and over-watering it invites disease. That's why older systems around Lake Carroll and in Carrollwood Estates benefit from rezoning: sunny and shady areas on separate valves, each with its own run time. Our irrigation service covers rezoning and controller programming; new systems and permits are handled with a licensed partner where required.
