Bahia acreage, St. Augustine fronts and big oaks
On a typical Valrico property, the front lawn and the back acreage want different grasses. HOA front yards are usually St. Augustine, kept at 3.5–4 inches. Behind the house, Bahia makes sense on larger ground. It roots deeply, needs little water or fertilizer and browns in drought before greening up when rain returns. Its most serious insect pest is the mole cricket; UF/IFAS suggests flushing them out with a couple of gallons of soapy water poured over a small patch before anyone treats.
Mature oaks on older parcels shade out sun-loving Floratam. Under heavy canopy, switch to a shade-tolerant St. Augustine, raise the canopy with careful tree trimming where it's allowed or convert the thinnest areas to mulch beds.
